Thank You!
What a blast! After canceling the festival once and then starting it back up again as a "gathering", we had roughly half the number of instructors and attendees that we had last year. Pretty amazing - which means that folks just really wanted to get their Key West groove on this year, no matter what.
I've uploaded 102 pictures from the 2nd Annual Key West Dulcimer Fest on Facebook and you can view them all here. More photos are coming and if you have pictures that you took, please share them with us!
We're already talking about next year's festival - so be sure to join the mailing list if you haven't already so we can get you the latest information.
Thanks again to the instructors and to everyone who came down to the Southernmost Point in the United States to attend our second annual festival. We sure couldn't have done it without you!

In Key Largo: The Marlin Restaurant

If you're into Cuban food, or would like to try some, then stop over at The Marlin Restaurant in Key Largo. From paella to black beans and rice with plaintains, there's a lot to like about this local establishment. Grab something to go from the order window out front and nosh as you continue your trek south towards Tavernier, Islamorada and Marathon.

In Florida City: Pack Up At Jack's

Once off of the Turnpike, you'll veer right and begin traveling on U.S. 1. Be warned that this is your last chance for about 40 minutes to make a restroom break, grab something to eat and drink or gas up and stretch your legs. Our traditional stop is at Jack's Bait & Tackle, which sounds like a lot less than it actually is. Yes, it's a bait and tackle shop. But there's also food, beverages, restrooms, t-shirts, hats, sundries and, oh yes, boiled peanuts. The cracking of shells and sucking of juices usually carries us all the way into Key Largo. If you've never had boiled peanuts - give 'em a try!
There is a Racetrac next door where you can gas up and shop a little more, if you like, but we like to support the mom and pop establishments that we run across in our travels and hopefully, you'll find Jack's as charming as we do.

Island Cousin: Key West Food & Wine Festival

While planning for our first festival last year, we suddenly discovered that the Key West Food & Wine Festival was also having its first festival on the exact same days!
This celebration of all things culinary welcomed us as a community partner in 2010 and we're pairing up again like Gewürtztraminer and cheesecake for 2011.
In fact, F&W festival-goers that show their registration badges get into the Friday and Saturday instructor concerts for $5!
Stay tuned for other cross-pollinating news between these two sophomore festivals.

Beginning Steel Drum
Play an authentic steel drum, professionally tuned, and learn the basics in one class! This fun and easy to learn instrument will add that Caribbean flavor to any music group. We will learn a few tunes and harmonies, how to play a chord back-up, along with a little chord theory on the steel drum. Take your steel drum home with you! (Drum is easy to transport home) Cost of class - $215.00 - includes steel drum.
Intermediate Steel Drum
Take your steel drum playing to the next level - even for the newer players. This class will emphasize chording and calypso rhythms in the keys of “D” and “G”. Calypso tunes will be taught with melody, harmony, chord back-up, and bass lines. This class will get you playing right away with your ʻgroupʼ - adding that great calypso flavor! Wear your Hawaiian shirt!
Hammered Dulcimers on the Islands
Take a trip to the islands! Learn what it takes to create that “Island Feel” on your hammered dulcimer. Learn some new tunes from the islands. Musicality will be emphasized as we learn back-up parts and harmonies to use in your dulcimer or other music group. As time permits, we will also focus on calypso rhythms and embellishments, improvising with a calypso feel, “vamping” and creating your own interludes for tunes.
Butch Ross
Bio: Ross had been a touring singer/songwriter when he was given a mountain dulcimer as a birthday present. At first, the instrument was a curiosity but before too long it became his instrument of choice. A chance meeting with musician, author and producer Robert Force (himself a dulcimer iconoclast) led to the 2005 release "The Moonshiner's Atlas" and a complete change of focus.
Since then Ross has become an in-demand performer at folk and dulcimer festivals through the US and Europe. He's performed at such festivals as the Central Ohio Folk Festival, Falcon Ridge Folk Festival, Lancaster (UK) Music Fest and the Philadelphia Folk Festival.
Workshops:
Dead Simple Tunes
Get your playing off to a running start with a handful of fun, yet really easy tunes. (Beginner)
I Don't Improvise, I Just Make Stuff Up
You don't need to be Steve Seifert or Jerry Rockwell to be a great improviser. In this class we'll learn the tips and techniques (and a couple tricks) you need to make your playing fun and interesting whether you're by yourself or in a group. (Intermediate/Advanced)
Keys to the Kingdom.
Brand new dulcimer? Been playing for years and still feel like you're just a beginner? well in this "bootcamp" for beginning dulcimerist we'll learn the fundamentals of strumming, chords, fingering, and even a little theory (but nothin' too scary). In short, everything you need for a solid foundation as a dulcimer player. (Beginner/Intermediate)
Syncopation and the 16th Note
Fear not the dreaded 16th note. we'll learn how to use this tiny increment of time to unlock expressive playing and make complicated rhythms easy and fun. (Advanced)
Gary Sager
Bio: Known as the “dulcimer doctor” at many festivals across the country, Gary Sager is a fine luthier of mountain dulcimers. His instruments are hand made of quality solid wood and are known for their rich tone and playability. Gary's dulcimers carry the Prussia Valley Dulcimer name.
He is also a fine performer and arranger of tunes, usually along with his wife, Toni. They have one album to their credit entitled “Rats In The Fence Corner” and are also instructors at many national festivals.

One for the history books...
THANK YOU!
To everyone who helped to make our 1st Annual Key West Dulcimer Fest a rousing success! From excellent participation in workshops, sold-out concerts and just about perfect weather for all four days (including excellent sailing weather on Sunday) to the great tunes, jams, dinners and excursions, everyone seemed to have a great time and we're already making plans for 2011!
Pictures are starting to come in from the fest and there will be plenty of video coming as well. Thanks again, everybody - this was an incredibly special event and we're blessed to have had even one - let alone a future of many more!
Aloha,

It's A Beautiful Day!
First day of the Key West Dulcimer Fest was a tremendous success! Workshops flowed as smoothly as the music - shuttles ran guests back and forth between the American Legion and Hurricane Hole - rave reviews for the instructors, the lunch and the dinner. The concert was standing room only and ran like clockwork and the post-concert jams were fiery and fun!
We're currently in our second day of workshops with the weather continuing to cooperate - looking forward to another wonderful turn out for the concert. There's still time to get in on the action this afternoon with special half-day registrations.
More to come! Check out some more photos on our Facebook page!

Wine, Please!

We've added another co-sponsor; The Key West Winery!
Our wines are non-traditional because we do not use any grapes to produce them. Instead, the winemaker has produced a line of wines that use fruits, berries and citrus. The remarkable result has been an assortment of wines that are full-bodied, very flavorful, with surprising bouquets.
Our wines are the real thing! Our citrus, berry and fruit wines are made from the finest, freshest, hand-selected fruit, squeezed and fermented at our parent winery in St. Petersburg, Florida. We have wines for all occasions, with a large selection to choose from.
The Key West Winery is located at 103 Simonton Street near the waterfront. Look for their rack cards at our information booth, American Legion!

Key Lime Heaven!

Robert Force and I went over to Kermit's shop and caught up with the man himself, getting the latest scoop on his recent television exposure and exciting new developments.
When in Key West, be sure to visit Kermit at his shop at 200A Elizabeth St.
Sunday Sunset Cruise: SECOND BOAT!

Well, our Sunday Sunset Cruise has proven to be so popular that we've needed to add a second vessel!
We'll be contacting the list of folks signed up to be sure that they know they're on the skipjack Danger. Those over the 28-person limit will be able to book passage aboard a Sebago catamaran for a sunset cruise as well.
Tickets for the Sebago cruise are $32 if we have more than ten people book the sail. Tickets will be available at the festival information booth located at the American Legion.

A Travel Tradition
Jack's Bait and Tackle
When Jack first started this bait and tackle shop he hung the sign saying "we are so poor, we can't afford a front door". This sign is still hanging here today! Our new shrimp tanks and aeration systems are designed by University of Florida Marine Biologists. We take pride in having shrimp most of the time. We also carry (when available) fresh ballyhoo, thread hearing and sardines. Our frozen baits are top quality. If you need specialty baits such as: Ladyfish, goggle eyes or flying fish etc, just give us a call and we will gladly have what ever you need available
The apparel side of the building has a wide variety of : Crocs, Costa Del Mar Sunglasses, Calcutta and Guy Harvey Clothing. Everything you need for the look of the keys.

As you make your exit and curve around to the right, you'll see a whole strip of gas stations, restaurants, shops and stores, all there because there's no stopping until you reach Key Largo, which is 29 miles away.
So, for certain, gas up and grab something to eat. One of our family traditions is to stop at Jack's (one of the last buildings on the right, next door to a huge new Race Trac station) for a restroom break and some of the best boiled peanuts you've ever tasted. Jack's is open 24 hours, so no matter when you swing through, it'll be there waiting for you.
Once in the Keys, we try to only support local businesses whenever possible - and Jack's is a Florida institution that we love to love!

Getting Started With Twitter

Need Twitter help? We'll be using Twitter during the Key West Dulcimer Festival to connect with guests and inform them of lots of stuff. From schedule-changes and announcements, shuttle service and special offers to jam times and places, special activities and other elements of the festival, Twitter will be one way that folks can stay updated with the latest information.
This website wiki features information on Twitter apps for mobile phones. If your phone can receive e-mail, then you can utilize Twitter and be part of the network in Key West.
Remember, once you sign up for Twitter, you'll need to start "following" us. When you're signed in (this is easiest to do from home, on your computer), just go here and then click on the "follow" button. It's as easy as that! Then, whenever you want to reach anyone from the festival, you precede your message with @KeyWestDulcimer and then type whatever you'd like to say!
Messages go out instantaneously and will be received via phone. Some apps are more customized than others, so your messages could show up as a text - or in a window as part of an application. Either way, if we suddenly find out that a jam is taking place at the Days Inn in ten minutes - you'll get a "tweet" letting you know so you don't miss a thing! If there has been a schedule change of any sort, you'll get the information without having to visit the information booth.
So, give it a try - we think you'll find it easy to use and very, very beneficial when it comes to sharing information!
If you have any questions, just "tweet!"

Our performing and instructing staff includes: David Beede, Robert Force, Bing Futch, Guy George, Tull Glazener, Jeff Hames, Lois Hornbostel, Dan Landrum, Karen Mueller, Aaron O'Rourke, Butch Ross, Gary Sager, Stephen Seifert, Rick Thum, Susan Trump and Roger Zimish..
Attendees will be able to take workshops in both hammered and mountain dulcimer as well as guitar, steel drums, pennywhistle, banjo, autoharp and other instruments. There will be a "dulcimer doctor" on-site tending to repairs and upgrades while vendors will supply everything from strings and music books, to stands and padded dulcimer cases.
Registration is $95 and includes all workshops and both nights of instructor concerts.
Some information you'll want to know:
• Temperatures should be around the mid 70's during all four warm and wonderful days.
• Link for the registration form is located to the left and you can print out as many copies as you need; one for each person attending. The form has info on instructor concert tickets for non-attendees and an area to order the official festival t-shirt.
• We have an accommodations coordinator; Sheri Cabanas. She's secured us fantastic festival rates at places within walking distance of Hurricane Hole Marina and the American Legion, where workshops, meals and concerts are taking place. If you're planning on camping, you'll want to call her straight away, as there are only so many slots available during high season. Give her a call at 305-294-6019.

If you're looking for a place to stay on Key West and have decided that The Southernmost Resort properties look good to you, we've got special rates available for festival attendees.
Contact them at (800) 354 4455 and mention promo code "DULMER."
As their name implies, Southernmost Resorts are the farthest you can go to the end of the Continental United States and they are on the quieter end of Duval St., where white sand beaches and open-air cafes provide plenty of relaxation and peaceful enjoyment.
• For the best experience, plan on arriving Wednesday afternoon/evening and staying through till Sunday afternoon. Thursday the 28th will be a laid-back day of informal jams, meet-n-greet, sightseeing and planned activities. Some of the instructors will be presenting masters classes on this day as well. Friday and Saturday, the 29th and 30th will be full curriculum days:

1st Period - 9-10 a.m.
2nd Period - 10:30-11:30 a.m.

A continental breakfast will be available at the American Legion each day with a full breakfast menu on Sunday. Both the American Legion and Hurricane Hole will offer lunch and dinner menus. Meals will be available for a nominal fee.
Sunday, the 31st, we'll have some more masters classes, informal jamming, sightseeing and winding down, leading up to a glorious sunset cruise upon the skipjack Danger in the Gulf of Mexico at 5 p.m.
We'll have more details on these events and we've got a lot more planned. You'll not only have plenty of time to soak in the island atmosphere, see the sights and enjoy the warm weather; you'll also get a good solid stream of instruction and jamming for mountain dulcimer, hammered dulcimer, autoharp, pennywhistle, steel drums, guitar and more!
Conveniently located at the Hurricane Hole Marina are charters for fishing, scuba-diving, para-sailing, kayaking, long-boarding, wave-runner rentals and more. The venue is located across the highway from the Key West Golf Club and Resort, which is right next door to the American Legion.
